It is the function of this unit to introduce you to the problems which exist within three areas of contemporary Philosophy. These problems will come from the following areas of Philosophy :

Epistemology
Metaphysics
Moral and Social Philosophy

The unit is therefore split into three sections. All students will complete the Epistemology section which explores the challenges of scepticism and the Metaphysics section which explores the question does God exist? The final section is split into 2 : Higher candidates will explore the issue of subjective and objective morality while Intermediate 2 candidates will explore the ideas of liberty and equality within the context of social philosophy.

Within each section you must :

  • Be able to identify and explain the problems within each section
  • Be able to identify and explain at least two viewpoints within each section

At the end of each section are questions to be answered and returned to your Tutor by the given deadlines, the deadlines will be found on the noticeboard in the market place. In addition you must also sit two NABs. Instructions for taking these will be given by your school.
