Problems
in Philosophy - Introduction
It is the function of this unit to introduce you to the problems which
exist within three areas of contemporary Philosophy. These problems
will come from the following areas of Philosophy :
Epistemology
Metaphysics
Moral and Social Philosophy
The unit is therefore split into three sections. All students will complete
the Epistemology section which explores the challenges of scepticism and
the Metaphysics section which explores the question does God exist? The
final section is split into 2 : Higher candidates will explore the issue
of subjective and objective morality while Intermediate 2 candidates will
explore the ideas of liberty and equality within the context of social
philosophy.
Within each section you must :
- Be able to identify and explain the problems within each section
- Be able to identify and explain at least two viewpoints within each
section
- Be able to evaluate and analyse the issues raised by each problem.
At the end of each section are questions to be answered and returned
to your Tutor by the given deadlines, the deadlines will be found on the
noticeboard in the market place. In addition you must also sit two NABs.
